The E4 Sundsvall is a road construction project comprising of 20 km of new European class motorway, from Myre in the south to Skönsberg in the north.
The project is an eagerly awaited improvement for this important transport link in northern Sweden. At present, this outdated road section creates a problem not only for drivers using the E4, but also for the development of the Sundsvall region.
A bridge across Sundsvall Bay
The E4 Sundsvall project includes 33 bridges. The longest will be built across Sundsvall Bay between Vindskärsudde and Skönsberg. The “double-curved” bridge is designed in accordance with the winning entry to the former Swedish Road Administration's architectural competition in 1996. The length will be 2,109 metres and the vertical clearance 33 metres.
The bridge foundations will be situated in loose subsoil, with piles of more than 30 metres in length and with a very wide span. Mounting the superstructure on the bridge will be a challenge; the bridge cannot be built without huge sections being lifted up from the water. Another complication is the necessary extra width required to connect entry and exit ramps. The abutments will be sturdy brick constructions to which ramps and bridges across traffic interchanges will be linked.
