The introduction of new technology in mobile operators' networks affect the GSM-R system. GSM-R is affected in two ways.
One is because the frequency spectrum GSM-R uses becomes more disturbed by mobile operators' base stations. These disturbances are handled by Trafikverket increasing the GSM-R coverage and mobile operators having limits on how much noise they are allowed to generate in the GSM-R's frequency spectrum.
The other is that the GSM-R system is affected by that the GSM-R mobiles on the locomotives are not capable of dealing with strong commercial signals from the mobile operators' 3G / 4G network. When these signals are too strong, the GSM-R terminal is disturbed even though there is GSM-R coverage. The behavior of the GSM-R terminal is the same as if there would be no GSM-R coverage.
PTS decided on 18 May to extend the technical protection of the railway communication system GSM-R with one year until 1 July 2016. This protection means continued restrictions until 1 July 2016 for the mobile operators who are licensed in the 900 MHz band closest to the spectrum that the railway communication use.
On 25 May, the Ministry of Industry had a meeting with mobile and train operators on the coexistence of GSM-R and 4G networks along the railway. The government decided that Trafikverket will coordinate the work. The responsibility includes making important information available and monitor train operators work to install filters. Trafikverket will continually report their status to the government.
