Stockholm City Line was completed 1 per cent over budget. The BanaVäg West project came in exactly on budget, and the Northern Link in Stockholm came in 21 per cent under budget. These are three of the largest infrastructure projects in Sweden since 2011.

The winners of the competition for the artistic interpretation of West Link’s Haga and Korsvägen stations have been announced.
We have started to move trees in preparation for the construction work on the West Link.
NCC Sverige AB and the German company Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG have been awarded the contract for the Korsvägen phase of the West Link. The contract is worth SEK 3.8 billion, and construction work is due to start in spring 2018.

Air quality varies at different times of the year and is affected by factors such as the weather. Consequently, it is important that we start measuring before construction begins.
After just over 40 years in the industry, I still have a great passion for discovery! I'm driven by not knowing what is on "the other side".
All buildings within 150 metres of the West Link tunnel and the Olskroken grade-separated junction will be surveyed before the start of construction, as well as buildings nearby that have sensitive foundations.
During the construction of the West Link, we will be conducting controls of our environmental impact. But we are already measuring factors such as noise, vibration and groundwater levels in order to obtain a picture of current levels.
The planning process used by Major Projects is not always easy to understand. It is a long process in which we need to go through many different stages before reaching the start of the construction phase.

There are natural environments along the West Link that will be affected by the construction of the tunnel. The protection of these nature and water environments is a top priority in the project.
On behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration, the City of Göteborg’s Environment Department has investigated the effects that the construction of the West Link and the Olskroken grade-separated junction will have on the city’s air quality.
Last spring, 227 artists submitted works in the first stage of the artistic design competition concerning the environments in Olskroken and the Central Station. The jury has now selected two winners: Katharina Grosse and Danh Vo!

When making plans for how the traffic will function during construction of the West Link, we think long-term. There will be a limited number of re-routings, and they shall be perceived as permanent, secure and safe.
In 2026, the first trains will roll into the tunnels of the West Link. The whole of the West Link will have a coherent artistic aesthetic that will be based on the city of Gothenburg as a place and an epoch.

The construction of the West Link will require re-routing and excavation of watercourses, for example Rosenlundskanalen. In situations where watercourses are affected, we inspect and document the water quality and wildlife found in the waterbed.

Construction of the West Link will give rise to a surplus of both rock and earth/clay requiring removal from the sites. In the summer, we signed agreements for selling the rock aggregates and procured recipients for some of the earth and clay aggregates.
With the re-laying of utility lines and other preparatory work, the West Link Project has begun to become increasingly visible around Gothenburg. We also conduct surveys and measurements to obtain the best possible data ahead of construction.

A construction barrier can perform several functions. It can reduce noise, prevent the spread of dust and dirt and increase safety around the workplace. A construction barrier can also provide an area for artistic activity.
Noise, structure-borne sound and vibrations are unwanted disturbances that arise around construction works. These types of sound mainly arise during above-ground construction next to open shafts.

Before the construction of the West Link begins, it is important for safety reasons to know about bore holes in the rock near where the tunnel will be built.
Approximately six kilometers of the West Link will be built through rock and clay below the groundwater table. Rock, soil and groundwater conditions must be inspected in order to handle risks and to prevent damage.

The process of applying for a permit to the Land and Environment Court was initiated in February. Now we are responding to comments from the first round of referrals.

In February 2016, NCC was awarded the Central Station Contract. In accordance with the Public Procurement Act, the decision of the Swedish Transport Administration can be appealed against ten days after the award.
At the moment, we are compiling the appeals that have been received concerning the West Link railway plan. After this, we will pass them on the the government.

In January we will apply for an environmental judgment for the West Link to the Land and Environment Court. The judgment establishes conditions for the project's impact on surface and groundwater, and for disturbances such as noise and vibrations.
Before the West Link construction we need to do some preparatory work in Gothenburg, for example re-routing cables in the ground. NCC has been awarded the contract for the first stage of the work, which is estimated to start in January 2016.

At the end of October we lifted and examined trees in Haga. It was a successful work and we are now analysing the results to be able to plan our continued work prior to construction of the West Link. See video clip from the work below.
For over three years we have studied the ground along the West Link route to get the best foundation prior to the construction. During 2016, we are starting up new measuring works that will continue until the West Link is completed in the year 2026.

Changes in the water level, e.g. due to heavy rain, is an important aspect to take into account in many types of construction works. The West Link is designed to manage both current and future water levels, which decreases risks such as flooding.

With the help of soil surveys along the West Link's route, we want to ensure that we are not affecting the surroundings and the environment more than necessary when constructing the West Link.
In the end of October, we test lifted and examined a number of trees that will be affected by the construction of the West Link. The purpose was to gain the necessary knowledge to later be able to preserve the trees by relocating them.
West Link Project staff: Bo Näverbrant is responsible for the work with the railway plan and for technical issues relating to the stations.
Due to the County Administrative Board's support for the West Link's railway plan, we have been able to submit the plan for approval this week.
The procurement of contractors to build the West Link is well underway. In September, a request for tenders for the Central Station contract was sent out to prequalified contractors. We are expected to sign a contract in April 2016.

The County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland supports the West Link railway plan. The plan can therefore continue to the next step in the planning process.
Construction of the West Link is planned to start in 2018, but before then we need to make some preparations in Gothenburg. During the fall 2015, we will start moving cables and pipes and examine trees in Haga.
It will be possible to preserve several of the trees affected by the West Link by moving them. During the fall, we will investigate the trees' roots and conduct trial lifts in Haga to learn more about how to move the trees at a later stage.
Prior the construction start of the West Link, we need to make certain preparations around the city. These preparations include moving cables and pipes in the ground, which we will start doing later this fall.
In connection with the construction of the West Link, we ensure that social aspects are taken into account together with the City of Gothenburg. In our procurements, we set social requirements to increase employment and reduce the social exclusion.

Some of the comments received during the review of the West Link railway plan has led to minor adjustments of the plan. Those affected have been informed and given the opportunity to submit their comments before the railway plan is formally adopted.
The Swedish Transport Administration, the City of Gothenburg and Västtrafik investigate and plan for traffic solutions prior to the West Link construction. Among other things, we are investigating whether the Göta Tunnel will be affected and if so, how.
Art is one of the tools to make the West Link a safe, functional and attractive facility. The Swedish Transport Administration, the City of Gothenburg and Västtrafik are currently developing an art programme.
At the end of May, the Swedish Transport Administration presented the report “The West Link - traffic, depos and scheduling”. The report confirms that the capacity of the railway system in western Sweden will be dramatically improved by the West Link.
For over three years, the Swedish Transport Administration has conducted ground surveys within and adjacent to the West Link route. The purpose of this is to find the conditions and produce the best foundation prior to the construction of the West Link.

As a step in the planning for the construction of the West Link and Olskroken Project, we will apply for a permit from the Land and Environment Court. In connection with the application, we have had consultation with those concerned.
Construction work can cause movements in the ground surface, which in turn can have an impact on buildings in the surroundings. With the help of satellites, we will monitor and keep track on movements that could occur when we construct the West Link.
Prior to construction of the West Link, a number of trees will have to be relocated, either temporarily or permanently. Therefore, we intend to test move a number of trees in cooperation with the City of Gothenburg and experts within the area.

During construction of the West Link, the surroundings will be influenced. Parts of the influence is regulated by legislation in the Environmental Code, which means that we need to apply to the Land and Environment Court for permits for our work.
All referral bodies have now submitted their statements on the West Link railway plan. The latest to be received were from the County Administrative Board and the City of Gothenburg. The work on compiling and processing the statements is now in progress.
Before the West Link’s construction, we are conducting archaeological excavations to take care of and document the ancient remains found along the route. The excavations are part of a larger research work to find out the construction conditions.
Incorrect information about what is included and what is not in the cost of the West Link is sometimes encountered. In order to sort out which information is correct, we have compiled a list.

The Swedish Transport Administration has conducted an updated cost assessment for the West Link project to make sure that it’s keeping within the adopted budget. According to the cost assessment there are no indications that the budget will be exceeded.
Between the December 10th 2014 and January 30th 2015, the West Link railway plan is exhibited for review. This means that the general public can take part of the Transport Administration’s proposal of how the facility can be designed and construced.
Construction of the West Link is bound to affect the traffic in Gothenburg. Therefore, extensive work is being done within the project to develop solutions to prevent disruptions and maintain accessibility in the city throughout the construction stage.
In November, the County Administrative Board approved the environmental impact assessment, EIA, for the West Link. The project now continues to work actively with the environmental issues prior to the construction and operation stages of the project.
The design of the West Link Station Haga has been awarded the prestigious World Architecture News Transport Award in the category “Future Projects” due to its excellent handling of the challenges associated with the sensitive environment around Haga.

The Swedish Transport Administration in the final stage of drawing up a proposal for the railway plan of the West Link Project. The plan is expected to be exhibited for review in December.
Proposed designs for the West Link stations will be presented in the design programme that is planned to be exhibited together with the Railway Plan in December. Apart from attractiveness, many features are taken into account when designing the stations.
