The West Link project is entering a new phase in March, when work will be seen in the urban environment for the first time. The application for a permit in accordance with the Environmental Code was submitted to the Land and Environment Court in the middle of February. The verdict is expected next summer. But there are already permits for doing some preparation work before the construction of the West Link starts in 2017/2018.
The first step is to move certain cables and pipes in the ground to facilitate future work when building railway tunnels. In March we will start relaying cables by Norra Hamngatan, Packhusplatsen and Kruthusgatan. This work involves pressing or digging in cables, and once they are in place we can restore the ground. We estimate that the relaying of cables at Norra Hamngatan and Packhusplatsen will take between four and seven weeks. During the work we will also make archaeological checks. If archaeological finds emerge, work at the site involved could take a little longer.
- We are doing this preparatory work now so that the construction of the West Link will go as smoothly as possible. It is also important to do it at a time that suits the cable owners as much as possible, says Jan Hansson, responsible for preparatory work.
Work with relaying cables is carried out during the daytime, and it will be seen and heard while it is in progress. In some places the work may lead to some disturbances of traffic, which will be controlled by traffic lights and the working area will be properly signposted to guide road traffic.
Preparatory work at Norra Hamngatan, Packhusplatsen and Kruthusgatan comes first, then work will start in many other places already planned around the city. In addition to relaying cables, other preparatory work will be started such as the reinforcement of Kungsgaraget, Stadsarkivet and Gårdatunneln, the relocation of Nordstan's loading ramp for goods vehicles, the diversion of traffic on Kruthusgatan, ramps by Örgrytemotet and preparations for the relocation of trees.
