Chronotopia – Gothenburg as a city and an epoch
Chronotopia expresses the artistic visions for the city transformation project West Link and Olskroken. The basic starting point for the artistic design of the project will be Gothenburg – as a city and an epoch.
Integrated artistic design for the Olskroken Grade Separation and West Link Project
The Swedish Transport Administration, Public Art Agency Sweden, Västtrafik, the Art Unit of Region Västra Götaland, the City of Gothenburg authorities and Göteborg Konst have together developed a comprehensive art programme for the West Link and Olskroken Grade Separation projects. This programme, which has the theme "Chronotopia" (time and place), describes a common view of the artistic design of the stations and the development of the city in the area surrounding them. The entire West Link Project shall have an integrated artistic design and can take its fundamental starting point in the City of Gothenburg as a place and an epoch.
Cooperation with Public Art Agency Sweden in an international art competition
In order to be able to generate exciting proposals for the designs of the stations Centralen, Korsvägen, Haga and Olskroken's grade-separated railway environment, the Swedish Transport Administration is collaborating with Public Art Agency Sweden in an international art competition. In 2026, the first trains will access the West Link tunnels and the artwork is planned to be part of a comprehensive artistic design rather than instead being experienced as an addition to a finished building.
The basic starting point for the artwork in the West Link stations is the city of Gothenburg as a place and an epoch, where a sounding out of our present era is combined with the potential and possible views of the future from the past," says Johny Lindeberg, an architect at the Swedish Transport Administration.
The first stage of the competition - Olskroken and Centralen
Six artists will be chosen and these will then be asked to submit outline proposals for artistic designs that cover both Central Station and the urban district of Olskroken. From the notifications of interest, a jury will then select six artists to compete. In the project, the relationships between the different places are very important, and in order to be able to maintain a flow of ideas the six competitors shall produce conceptual proposals for artistic designs that cover both Central Station as well as the bridges and urban environments in Olskroken. The first stage of the competition began on 21 March and the decision reached by the jury will be communicated in January 2017. During 2017, similar competitions will be arranged for the stations at Haga and Korsvägen.
A preliminary budget for the artistic designs in the new underground Central Station and for the new bridges and urban environments in Olskroken is SEK 8-9 million.
On18 April, work started on the preparation of five trees for relocation prior to construction of the West Link and Haga Station.
