Inspection programme part 4 - flora and fauna

There are natural environments along the West Link that will be affected by the construction of the tunnel. The protection of these nature and water environments is a top priority in the project.

The West Link project has produced inspection programmes for surface water, flora and fauna. The aim of the programmes is to show how we are working to protect the natural environment found along the West Link. The programmes describe the inspections which will be carried out before, during and after the construction of the West Link.

Inventories are taken in areas which will be affected by the construction work and where protected species may exist. We have examined different types of aquatic flora, bottom-dwelling fauna and fishes in the affected bodies of water such as the Säve river, Näckrosdammen and Stora Hamnkanalen.Protection measures can include moving trees with rare types of lichen or aquatic flora like the hairlike pondweed and fauna like the two lipped door snail. We began our inspections in 2014 and will conduct follow-up inspections every other year. The last inspections will be done in 2028 after the West Link has been put into operation.

Together with arborists, experts and the Museum of Gothenburg, we have mapped out the trees that will be affected by the works. Since 2014, we have taken inventory of around 1,500 trees in street and park environments in order to determine their health, age and species. The inventories are used when making decisions that affect the trees, to avoid unnecessary loss of natural values. Based on our findings, we have also began investigating how to best move and protect the trees. Some trees are unlikely to thrive if left in place or moved and will therefore be replaced by new trees, at their current location or somewhere else in the city.

- Air quality, e.g. air quality above ground outside the work area
- Cultural environment, e.g. ancient monuments, vibration-sensitive settlements of historic cultural value
