Inspection Programme Part 5 – Air Quality

Air quality varies at different times of the year and is affected by factors such as the weather. Consequently, it is important that we start measuring before construction begins.

The environmental quality norms for oxides of nitrogen are already being exceeded in some areas of Gothenburg, especially those close to major roads. In light of this, we will be placing stringent demands on contractors’ emissions from machinery and lorries. There will be an impact on air quality while we are building the West Link.

Measures to reduce the impact on air quality

During construction we will be using machinery that is primarily diesel-powered, which will result in local emissions of air pollutants such as oxides of nitrogen. Heavy vehicles such as lorries must comply with Euro VI. With regard to machinery, at least 40% must comply with Stage IV and the rest must be at least Stage IIIB. Euro VI and the other Stages are examples of environmental classes that are used to set requirements concerning vehicle emissions. The environmental classes indicate the maximum permissible emissions for a range of different air pollutants.

Various measures can be put in place to reduce the impact of air pollutants originating from our work sites. For example, air ventilated from the tunnels in which we are working can be purified by passing it though a particle filter. Other measures include watering or salting surfaces and roads within the work site to reduce the amount of dust. As a last resort it is even possible to lay asphalt within the site.

- Cultural environment, e.g. ancient monuments, vibration-sensitive settlements of cultural historical value
