What: A new coastal railway line between Umeå-Luleå, approximately 270 km long. We will also build 550 km roads (public roads and service roads) and approximately 250 bridges. Travel centers are planned in Skellefteå, Piteå and Luleå. Regional train stations are planned in Sävar, Robertsfors, Bureå and Byske.
Why: The North Bothnia Line will strengthen rail freight traffic in Sweden, and will also allow for passenger traffic between the cities along the Norrland coast. It will bring double tracks to the Main Line (Stambanan), increased capacity, substantial reductions in transport costs and halved travelling times along the coast.
Cost: Approximately SEK 29 bn (at 2013 price levels).
Construction start: 2018.
Finished: Umeå-Dåva, open for traffic in 2024. Umeå-Skellefteå, open for traffic in 2030.
