Examensarbete Tunnel Construction Noise Prediction

Ground borne noise from railway traffic have gained increased interest as tunnels for railway traffic in urban areas have become more common.

Sök tjänsten

Ground borne noise may appear in buildings as a low-frequency mumbling sound for cases where railway traffic in nearby tunnels is in the same bedrock as the building is founded. Without mitigations ground-borne noise can impair human health.

Om jobbet

In a research project financed by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) a methodology and model for prediction of ground-borne noise from railway traffic in tunnels in bedrock have been developed. The model is not fixed but will be continuously developed as new input (measurements or numerical simulations) are made available. It is of interest to extend the model to also predict ground-borne noise during the construction phase. Predictions are, for instance, needed for the Environmental Impact Assessment.

In the proposed M.Sc. project, the goal is to include tunnel construction sources and the resulting ground-borne noise in an existing ground borne noise model.

The work consists of a literature study, analysis of existing experimental data, eventually additional experimental analysis and/or numerical simulations, and implementation of the tunnel construction sources in the prediction model.

Problem that is of intrerest to us: We are open for suggestions in change of scope and method

How to extend the model to also predict ground-borne noise during the construction phase?

Kvalifikationer

You are self-motivated and take initiative to drive processes forward. You have strong analytical skills and the ability to understand how results impact the bigger picture. You enjoy collaborating with others and are eager to learn and develop new skills.

Required background: A student in Master studies in sound and vibration or equivalent.

Knowledge about vibroacoustics (sound and vibration) is useful.

Övrig information

This is ad for a Master thesis (30pts), the thesis can be written in either in English or Swedish, by one student, or as a team of more than one.
