Examensarbete: TCO-model for Electrification (Construct-machines)

Method: Develop a TCO model for representative machine classes (e.g., excavators, wheel loaders, and articulated haulers) covering capital, energy, maintenance, and infrastructure costs over machine lifetime.

Treat key drivers as distributions rather than point values and run Monte Carlo simulation to produce cost ranges and break-even probabilities. Perform sensitivity/scenario analysis on the tax exemption, electricity price, and utilisation. Populate with manufacturer data, Trafikverket contract data, and literature.

Om jobbet

Expected results: Probabilistic TCO comparisons per machine class showing where and how often each pathway is cheapest; the cost drivers that dominate the outcome; break-even conditions between HVO and electric; and a quantified view of how policy changes (loss of the exemption, bonus levels) shift the balance.

Problem: Contractor fuel-pathway choices depend heavily on cost, but the relative economics of diesel, HVO, and electric machines are deeply uncertain and policy-dependent: they turn on fuel and electricity prices, the level of fuel reduction mandate, the CO2-emission and energy-tax exemptions for high-blend biofuels, charging infrastructure capital, and battery costs. Comparing the three pathways for the machine classes these projects actually use requires a transparent, uncertainty-aware TCO basis, which would strengthen both contractor decisions and Trafikverket's requirement design.

We are open for suggestions in change of scope and method, that needs to be approved by Trafikverket before the start of the work.

Kvalifikationer

You are self-motivated and take initiative to drive processes forward. You have strong analytical skills and the ability to understand how results impact the bigger picture. You enjoy collaborating with others and are eager to learn and develop new skills.

Required background: A student in industrial engineering and management, energy economics, or mechanical/energy engineering with strengths in techno-economic analysis, cost modelling, and probabilistic/statistical methods.

Övrig information

This is ad for a Master thesis (30pts), the thesis can be written in either in English or Swedish, by one student, or as a team of more than one.
