Double tracks between Maria station and Helsingborg C

We are planning to extend the railway between Maria station and Helsingborg C from single track to double track.

The route between Maria in northern Helsingborg and Helsingborg Central Station provides an important link for passenger services in western Sweden. This 4.5-kilometre section of railway constitutes a bottleneck in the system and will be the last section of the West Coast Line to be extended to double track.

Construction of a double track in a tunnel through Varberg which will open in 2025 has been ongoing since 2020, along with extension to a double track on the Ängelholm-Maria section, which will be opening in December 2023. The full capacity of the West Coast Line will not be achieved until the entire line is a double-track section.

More trains and shorter journey times

Extending to double track will increase capacity and benefit rail travel by increasing the number of departures, improving punctuality and reducing susceptibility to disruptions. The journey time between Gothenburg and Malmö is expected to be just over two hours when the entire West Coast Line is completed. This extension work will also help to reduce carbon emissions by allowing more traffic to be transferred from road to rail.

Rail services will be more accessible

More frequent services will benefit regional development. A more reliable, more accessible rail service will make it easier for passengers to commute to work. The double track will enhance public transport to Ängelholm and Helsingborg, and between north-western Skåne and southern Halland.
